چکیده
Abstract. Changes in Arctic sea ice thickness are the result of complex interactions dynamic and variable cover with atmosphere ocean. Most exiting Ocean does so through Fram Strait, which is why long-term measurements at end Transpolar Drift provide insight into integrated signals thermodynamic influences along pathways ice. We present an updated summer (July–August) time series extensive surveys carried out between 2001 2020. Overall, we see a more than 20 % thinning modal since 2001. A comparison this first preliminary results from international Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for Study Climate (MOSAiC) shows that MOSAiC floe its wider vicinity consistent previous years Drift. By combining unique Lagrangian tracking tool, ICETrack, simple growth model, link observed interannual variability north Strait to increased drift speeds consequential variations age. also show influence upward-directed ocean heat flux eastern marginal zones, termed Atlantification, not only responsible around Laptev Sea but induced anomalies persist beyond Russian shelves potentially still measurable after year. With tendency towards even faster Drift, winter will have less compensate impact processes, such as on zone, increasingly be felt other parts sea-ice-covered Arctic.

Late-summer sea ice thickness variability in the Arctic Transpolar Drift 1991--2001 derived from ground-based electromagnetic sounding
[1] Late-summer thickness distributions of large ice floes in the Transpolar Drift between Svalbard and the North Pole in 1991, 1996, 1998, and 2001 are compared. They have been derived from drilling and electromagnetic (EM) sounding. Results show a strong interannual variability, with significantly reduced thickness in 1998 and 2001. The mean thickness decreased by 22.5% from 3.11 m in 1991 to...

Measurements of sea-ice thickness were obtained from drill holes, an ice-based electromagnetic induction instrument (IEM), and a ship-borne electromagnetic induction instrument (SEM) during the early-melt season in the southern Chukchi Sea in 2002 and 2004, and in late summer 2003 at the time of minimum ice extent in the northern Chukchi Sea. An ice roughness criterion was applied to distinguis...

ERS-1/2 SAR and Wind Scatterometer data are analyzed together with DMSP SSM/I microwave radiometer data to investigate interannual variability in Weddell Sea ice and summer melt signatures during the period 1992-1997. Simultaneous SAR and Scatterometer images were obtained during a February 1995 cruise of the H.M.S. Endurance and aerial photographs collected for validation of the satellite obse...
